My high school has never had a very good art program. This past year we actually
laid off our only art teacher due to budget cuts, so now there isn’t even an art class.
Despite this, I’ve managed to teach myself technique through practice. My mom
has been an amazing help. As a professional artist who attended college for art,
she’s the only person I know who has been able to point out my drawings’ flaws and show me how to make them better. Here are some of them that I’ve completed over the years.![]() “Self Portrait.” My earliest (semi-successful) portrait drawings were all in pencil. I began them my freshman year. Most of them aren’t amazing, but I put a bit more effort into this one. It was my first good self-portrait, drawn from a photo I took of myself. (Pencil.) ![]() “Willow.” Later, I went on to use color pencils. The biggest challenge of this one was capturing the sweater’s texture. It was drawn from a photo I took of my best friend’s little sister. (Color pencil.) ![]() “Ema Lou.” I discovered the amazing texture of water color paper in color pencil drawings. I drew this portrait from a photo. (Color pencil.) ![]() “Margaret Part I.” My favorite portrait of the time. People always thought it was a self-portrait because of the red hair. Drawn from a photo. (Color pencil.) ![]() “Margaret Part II.” A close up of Margaret. (Color pencil.) ![]() “Hands.” My hand study, drawn of my left hand from life. (Color pencil.) ![]() “Creepy Baby.” A large (18”x24”) drawing inspired by a photo of a deformed fetus that I found in my Body Worlds catalogue. I went through several orange pencils, and a couple of green ones. (Color pencil, markers.) ![]() “Honey Do.” A self-portrait drawn from a photo I took. I made several hilarious puns while working on it: “I sure have a bee in my bonnet!” and “I’m just a busy little bee!” (Color pencil.) ![]() “Still Life.” Since I mostly do portraits, I thought I’d change it up and try a still life. I’ve done several before, but none I would feature in a portfolio. In this one I challenged myself by including glass as well as organic textures. (Pencil, color pencil.) ![]() “Frankensteinbeck.” I recently started an online blog to post my illustrations. This is one of my first combinations of pen and Photoshop. You can view my blog at www.frankensteinbeck.blogspot.com. (Pens, Photoshop.) ![]() “Rotary Phone.” I drew/Photoshopped this for a music video my dad was working on. Although I had already discovered the magic of layers in Photoshop, it was during creating this illustration that I made full use of different brush textures. (Pens, Photoshop.) ![]() “Zombie Face.” I just made this in the last few days. I wanted a less serious self-portrait that would feature my Photoshop skills. Drawn from life, then colored in Photoshop. (Pens, Photoshop.) Well, those are my drawings. Now you could take a look at my photography!
